Rampage Pro Wrestling wrapped up their television tapings for 2010 Saturday night at Johnny G’s Fun Center in Warner Robins, GA, closing out the year in novel fashion with a 10 man elimination match that consumed the entire final hour.
It was a good show featuring the combination of solid in ring action and interesting, logical plot development that have become RPW’s calling card. Every match had storyline implications. With that said, there was nothing last night that could measure up to NWA World Tag Team Title match (Dark City Fight Club vs. Usual Suspects) two weeks ago.
Attendance was right at 100, a handful less than the previous taping. Like last time, they responded to all the characters and angles.
The first two matches were taped for the 30 minutes RPW Rewind show.
(1) Frankie Valentine beat Josh Storm in 5:28. There was a smoothness about this match that usually only happens when two guys have spent significant time in the ring together. The returning Valentine received a warm welcome. He did scientific style number on Storm’s arm. Storm finally threw a closed fist. Strom got some offense after Valentine missed a moonsault. Valentine has added a Pele kick to his repertoire. It connected solidly. Valentine used a classic Brad Armstrong floatover Russian legsweep for a near fall. Storm used a Side Effect for his big near fall. Valentine won it with a chestcracker. Nice, crisply worked opener.
Afterward, while Jimmy Rave and Jeremy Vain looked on, Rave’s minions (Corey Hollis, Chip Day and Mike Posey) attacked Valentine and left him laying with a triple kick. Rave said Valentine would never ever be Rave Approved. Simple stuff but totally despicable, heinous and disgusting.
(2) Ace Haven vs. Anthony Andrews was ruled a no contest when Konkrete Gorillaz (Jay Fury & Nemesis) crashed the party. They worked a fast and sloppy two minutes before the Gorillaz arrived. The interesting thing was how the fans are taking to Haven a bit.
Gorillaz hit a double burning hammer on Haven. It looked awesome, like they killed him dead. The kid has more guts than sense to take that move. Gorillaz then had their type of fun with the crowd. Those dudes are a heat matchine.
For hour number one, which will air in Macon on Christmas Day
(3) Usual Suspects (Murder One & AJ Steele) & Dr. Johnny Gayton beat Killer Instinct (Jake Slater & Mike Stratus) & Pain (with Charlie Cash) in 12:02. Lots of love for Suspects. Nice attention to detail as ring announcer Miss Allie stood behind the ref to do the intros because Pain was creeping her out. Murder was on fire early. Suspects isolated Slater. Doc was in very briefly. Steele used a bear hug, then got his back and hammered him with crossface forearms, much to Murder’s delight. A cheap shot by Stratus set up the heat on Murder, who has become a top notch babyface-in-peril. After a Pain powerslam, Steele had to make a save. Stratus hit a spinebuster and Doc broke up the pin. Bad ring position watered down the hot tag. After Steele hit the Steele City Bomb on Slater, Gayton came in to make the pin. Good match. Finish was on the awkward side.
Postmatch, Bobby Moore nailed the Doc with his running kick. Pain then gave Doc the Asian spike. Gayton had a lot of blood coming out of his mouth. .
(4) Mr. Jones beat Bobby Moore (with Charlie Cash & JT Smooth) via DQ in 6:30. Moore attacked as Jones entered. Jones gave Moore a backdrop and teed off on him but not for long. Within the first minute, Moore put the big man down with a ropes mounted shoulder block. Moore went on to dominate the body of the match. The action spilled outside. Jones ran into the post on a failed El Squasho attempt. Moore followed with a tope and Jones was almost counted out. Jones hit a great looking spear, but Moore kicked out of it. Jones said it was time to “cash him out”. As Jones started to climb for the splash, he was attacked by Killer Instinct. With the way his last two matches played out, Mr. Jones has looked like anything but a world beater.
Fans starting chanting for Murder. Suspects hit the ring right on time. Cash’s posse bailed. Fans chanted “Mike’s scared of AJ”. Cash’s guys are being such lowlifes, that this story is working better than I thought it would.
(5) J-Rod & Bull Buchanan beat Hot Like Lava (Cru Jones & Shaun Banks) when Buchanan pinned RPW Heavyweight Champion Banks at 15:55. Buchanan, the man that lost the RPW Heavyweight Title to Banks, was introduced as J-Rod’s missing mystery partner from two week ago. He looked like a monster compared to the others. Jones actually wrestled with jingle bells attached to the crotch of his trunks. Cru made Banks start. Buchanan sent Banks flying with one stiff right hand and basically beat his ass. Cru capitalized on a blind tag to get the advantage of J-Rod. Lava worked over J-Rod’s back. Banks hit a swank inverted suplex. When he tried it again, J-Rod countered with a release german suplex for a nice hope spot. J-Rod hit his up & over backcracker and the hot tag was made. Buchanan hit the scissors kick and pinned Banks with a wicked lariat. Buchanan said he was coming for his belt.
For hour number two, which will air on New Year’s Day.
Ben Masters informed the crowd that due to injuries suffered in the attack by Rave Approved, Valentine had been pulled from the main event, leaving Matthews’ team short a man. Sal Rinauro was the surprise replacement. It was Rinauro’s first RPW match since the summer and the first since he resigned as the RPW Commissioner.
(6) In a 10 man elimination match, Team Matthews (Kyle Matthews & Sal Rinauro & Adrian Hawkins & Drew Adler & Marvelous Michael Stevens) beat Team Rave Approved (Jimmy Rave & Jeremy Vain & Corey Hollis & Chip Day & Mike Posey) in 39:23. A fast and furious opening saw the Team Mathews hit a train of big moves on Rave. Matthews was about to deliver the coup de grace when he got pulled out of the ring. Rave pinned Stevens with Move That Rocked The World in just 1:15. Rave then got DQed for blasting Matthews with a chain at 2:13. Matthews was busted open and taken to the back with a towel over his head. It settled into a regular tag match, and for several minutes it was The Sal Rinauro Show. He had the crowd behind him. The faces were destroying Posey’s arm, until Day made a blind tag and eliminated Adler with a top rope double knee at 11:27. That left only Hawkins and Rinauro against four Rave Approved guys. The story became Rave Approved using their number advantage to wear them down. TV Champion Vain ran away from Hawkins, his former partner and primary challenger for the title. I expected this to be played up more than it was. Rinauro took heat twice. I was surprised by how much he was in the match. Hawkins hit his signature springboard back elbow, but got hauled into the heel corner as he desperately clawed for a tag. It looked great as a hope spot. Vain and Hawkins ended up fighting on the outside. Vain took a backdrop over the rail. Hawkins hit Vain with cotton candy from the concession stand. Funny stuff. Both were counted out at 28:24. Rinauro waded in against all three opponents. I don’t know what RPW has planned for him, but at this point, Rinauro’s not in his best ring shape, and on this night, Valentine would have been a better choice for jump starting a babyface in a high profile situation. Hollis used the Austin Aries inside/outside DDT on the apron. Sal busted out the Phoenix Fuy Legdrop and managed to deck all three heels, before Day spiked him with a reverse huracanrana. Day pulled Rinauro up at two. Sal rallied. He sent Hollis crashing on top of Day with a top rope bulldog. Matthews returned to the apron with a bloody bandage around his forehead. Before he could tag in, Posey pinned Rinauro with an inside cradle at 36:23. Matthews was a man on a mission. He rolled Day up at 37:28. After decking Hollis and Posey with a tope, Matthew pinned Hollis with the Slurpee Kick at 38:18. Matthews then submitted Posey with the Octopus submission he brought back from Japan end the match. It was a risk to do match of this length. On the whole, it paid off well. The last few minutes after Matthews returned worked great. The crowd was into every move he made.
As a result, Matthews earns the match of his choosing against the opponent of his choosing (I can’t imagine who that will be) at a later date.
