July 27 Anarchy Wrestling Report from Cornelia, GA
From Larry Goodman:
Simply put, the July 27 Anarchy Wrestling TV Taping exemplified how good pro wrestling on the independent level can be.
There were moments of true magic. Suspension of disbelief was the order of the day. Anarchy does their damnedest not to insult your intelligence. The stories (by Bill Behrens and Todd Sexton) are really starting to cook. The wrestling was a cut above what can be found anywhere else on the Georgia indy scene. This was no nonsense wrestling intended for a serious audience.
The lineup looked strong on paper and the show was even better. Anarchy delivered their best TV taping of the year, and a better show than their most recent major event, Hostile Environment.
The heels won all of the key matches. Bobby Moore and Billy Buck had another outstanding match. That seems to be only kind they have. The match between Anthony Henry and Seth Delay was so good that I almost how much I hated the idea of it being the sixth match in a best of five series. Unforgiveable Blackness (Jackson, Nemesis and Geter) were booked strong and it was highly effective.
Anarchy should bottle the crowd from last night and sell it -- 105 with some new faces for a change. They were far more vocal with their appreciation than the typical crowd in Cornelia, and they sustained their enthusiasm for three full hours. That said, being in the presence of quality art is bound to evoke emotion.
"The Modern Classic" BJ Hancock came out to a mixed reaction that quickly soured into a somewhat redundant BJ sucks chant. Hancock said his life in Anarchy had been a living hell losing alongside that teeny bopper Joey Rhymer. Hancock said he broke Rhymer into wrestling 3 years ago, and if he ever showed his face again, he would end his career as quickly as he started it.
(1) BJ Hancock defeated Dango Wynn via DQ due to interference by Joey Rhymer at 4:42. Hancock went right to the rough stuff. Dango answered with a spinwheel to the mush. More rough stuff from Hancock, He called Wynn "Joey". After a double down, Wynn planted Hancock with a DVD and headed up to the top rope. Joey came running in from the front door with a diving headbutt onto Hancock for the DQ.
Hancock skedaddled. Dango was not happy about Rhymer costing him the match but decided to let bygones be bygones. Rhymer gets Hancock when Anarchy returns to action on August 10.
(2) CB Suave (with Charlie Cash) defeated Kevin Blue (with Brandon Parker) tor retain the Anarchy Young Lion's Championship in 7:18. A see saw battle of high impact moves. Blue is getting over as a babyface. The suplex into a side Russian legsweep was nice, but some of his offense looks mushy. Suave was milking the swivel hips gyrations for all they were worth. He does what's necessary and keeps it crisp. Blue hit the Air Raid Crash. Suave's Cash Vault compadre Moore charged down the ramp. but was cut off by Brandon Parker. Cash distracted Blue and Suave nailed him with this corkscrew neckbreaker thingy for the pin.
(3) Top contender tag team title tournament: Urban Assault Squad (Nemesis & Shadow Jackson) defeated The Movement (Najasism & Vandal) in 11:22. Movement attacked before the bell, then dissected the leg of Nemesis. A nasty thug in agony can be so satisfying. Jackson interfered and UAS got heat on Vandal. Nemesis chopped Vandal so hard that the kids sitting in front of me were feeling his pain. Vandal has had some good outings lately, This wasn't one of them. His stuff looked weak. Naja got the tag, but his double clothesline bounced right off of UAS. They just stood there and looked at him, so he went back to the drawing board with a double dropkick. That worked. Naja hit the Iron Boot on Jackson, but he got his foot over the ropes. Nemesis kicked out of a wicked combo move, blocked a second Iron Boot and then blocked Vandal's finisher. UAS crushed Vandal with a double Samoan Drop for the win. I liked this match a lot. The methodical pace and psychology of working a body part was a nice contrast to the first two matches. The storytelling was clear and uncluttered. Unforgiveable Blackness (Jackson, Nemesis and Geter) are being booked strong.
Postmatch - UAS did the beast up. Jackson got one more in for good measure on Naja, knocking him over the rail.
(4) No DQ, no time limit: "Five Star King" Anthony Henry (with Miss Rachael) defeated Seth Delay in the deciding match of best of five series at 17:31. Rachael said Henry's wrestling would speak for itself. Delay had a trash can lid and trash bag for Rachael. Henry launched into his now familiar attack on Delay's injured shoulder, but Delay turned the tables on him. Familiar attack on arm. Seth turned the tables on him, but Henry had Delay's signature moves scouted in the early going. There was a very cool sequence where Henry got Delay in an inverted Gori Special that Delay reversed with an electric chair hotshot and a brainbuster. They traded blows with Delay getting the best of it. Delay hit the double knee gutbuster but Henry got a foot on the ropes. Delay twice got the ankle lock applied, but Henry was able to escape each time. Henry applied the Rings of Saturn, which looked like no fun at all for Delay. Henry hit a Death Valley Driver but Delay kicked out. No water in the pool for Henry's frogsplash. Delay's high crossbody sent both men tumbling over the top rope. Delayn got the trash can lid. Henry cowered behind Rachael to avoid taking the punishment. Delay winged Henry with the trash can lid to spill him off the top. They fought into the crowd. Back inside the ring, Rachael was going to hit Delay with her high heel shoe, but Seth saw her coming and pulled the trash bag down over her head. Henry caught Delay unaware with a high knee for a sweet false finish. When Delay tried for the Kool Krusher, Henry ducked and nailed him with Rachael's shoe for the 1-2-3. All of their matches have been good and they saved the best for last.
Postmatch, Henry draped the trashbag over Delay and relished the moment.
(5) The Elite (Shaun Tempers & Se7en with Attorney Jeff G. Bailey) defeated Azrael & Mikael Judas to win the Anarchy Wrestling Tag Team Championship in 7:57. As Judas made his grand entrance, he was blindsided by Geter, who ran him into the announcer's booth. Geter grabbed a chair out of the crowd. and in doing so, put the fear of God into some poor teenage girl. Geter blasted Judas' knee with the chair until Jeremy Vain and Brodie Chase came out to help Judas to the back. Azrael had to go it alone. He took a ferocious beating, but kicked out of Se7en's sky high elbow and his massive belly to belly suplex. Judas limped back out with his knee wrapped. Judas decked both Elite guys with one blow apiece, but referee Mark Cooper didn't see the tag, and Azrael was ultimately pinned by Se7en.
The uber frustrated Judas made it clear to Cooper that he was on his bad side, and that's not a place you want to be.
(6) Mike Posey defeated Kyle Matthews in 12:20. Matthews tied Posey in knots. Posey was bamboozled and Anarchy owner Frankin Dove looking on with pleasure. There was a fun spot where Matthews got Posey in the rocking horse and bonked his head on the bottom
turnbuckle. Posey was bamboozled. Nothing was working for Posey until he managed to cut off Matthews' suicide plancha and send him into the post. Posey slowed things down. Matthews came back with a textbook dropkick, hit the suicide plancha and followed with a frogsplash for a near fall. Posey fought off a superplex. Matthews missed a top rope splash. Posey hit the Gamebreaker for a close near fall, but missed with the Alabama Jam. Matthews went for an O'Connor Roll, and Posey rolled through and got the pin using the tights. It's always a pleasure to watch a display of technical expertise by Matthews. He's gotten much better at connecting with the crowd. Posey was also very good here, and the finish served just fine to further his issue with Dove.
(7) Cody Hall defeated Paul Jordane in 8 minutes. Hall was channeling his dad's mannerisms bigtime. The match presented a different challenge for Hall than his other Anarchy bouts. Jordane is a former WWE developmental wrestler and current champion of New Heights Wrestling (Defuniak Springs, FL). He's just as tall as Hall and heavier, but doesn't have the WWE physique. Based on this match, I don't know what WWE saw in him except size. Hall impressed with his quickness and precision. It was all Hall until he missed an elbow drop. Jordane went on offense with forearms to the kidneys. Hall came back with the fallaway slam to set up the Razor's Edge, but Jordane countered with a backdrop. They did a double clothesline spot that was major league quality - a hell of a spot with two guys that size. Hall pinned Jordane with a claw hold. Weird choice of finisher if you ask me.
(8) Geter defeated Shaun Tempers (with Jeff G. Bailey) to become the number one contender for the Anarchy Heavyweight Championship in 4:53. The stipulation was that any wrestler coming to ringside would be suspended. As soon as the bell rang, Judas approached the ring from the front entrance. A slew of babyface wrestlers ran out to block his path and were eventually able to coax him into turning back. Bailey slugged Geter with the Temptation spray can to give Tempers the advantage. Tempers worked on Geter's shoulder as best he could. Geter gave Tempers a World's Strongest Slam like he was nothing. Tempers starting bumping like a pinball, and Geter finished him with a belly to belly suplex. Fans were caught off guard by Geter making such short work of Tempers. There's nothing predictable about Anarchy these days.
Vain defends the title against Geter on August 10..
(9) Top contender tag team title tournament: Brodie Chase & Jeremy Vain defeated Washington Bullets (Jon & Trey Williams) in 11:05. Trey said the Bullets had a proposal for Vain. Jon told Vain that he was a singles wrestler not a tag team wrestler, and besides, he already had a belt, so he should just lay down for the pin. Vain slapped the nuts out of both of them. Vain and Chase made Bullets pay dearly for running their mouths. Fun stuff. The crowd showed signs of battle fatigue for the first time all night. Bullets got heat on Vain. Vain did a full rotation on a double backdrop and made the tag. Bullets leveled Chase with a kick combo but it wasn't enough to beat him. The Bullets messed up and Trey kicked Jon. Vain hit the VKO and Chase followed with the double arm DDT to pin Trey.
UAS vs. Chase & Vain takes place on August 10 with the winning team earning a title shot at the Elite on August 24.
(10) Bobby Moore (with Charlie Cash) defeated Billy Buck to retain the Anarchy TV Championship and end Buck's Anarchy career in 16:19. Moore had transcended the buffoonish "Barney" heat to become a serious heel. Papa Buck came down the ramp with Billy. Moore hit the sick kick right at the opening bell and was all over Buck. Buck gathered himself and answered with a barrage of offense. Buck was eating Moore's lunch. Cash jumped up and barely escaped Buck's grasp. Moore capitalized on the distraction. Moore busted out the heavy forearms. Buck dodged Moore's spear and scored with the Samoan Drop. Cash slid the loaded forearm pad into the ring, but Buck got it first. When Buck went to use the loaded pad, Moore speared him out of his boots. A second sick kick sent Buck out to the floor. Moore screamed at Dee Byers to count Buck out. When Buck beat the count, Moore lost what little was left of his sick mind. Buck locked in the figure four. While Cash ran distraction, Suave ran in and hit Buck with the belt to break the hold. Blue and Parker came out to take care of Suave. Buck ducked a belt shot and clocked Moore with it. Cash jumped up and got a bionic elbow for his troubles. That bought Moore enough time to kick out with blood streaming down his face. Moore with a wicked STO but no cigar. Moore got the loaded elbow pad from Cash. Buck blocked it and got a near fall with a bridging german suplex. Buck fought off a superplex, but Moore ducked his flying bodypress, and both men were down. They traded vicious shots. Moore went for the belt shot again and ate a superkick right on the button. Buck covered for an apparent three count but Cash put Moore's foot on the ropes. Moore connected with the belt. Buck kicked out but a second belt shot did him in. Another great match for Buck and Moore. What else is new? These guys can't go wrong. Everything flows and they bring it with intensity. They pulled out all the stops and it worked.
Postmatch, Cash cried crocodile tears. Chase confronted Byers about his slack officiating. The fans chanted "thank you, Billy".
